They turned to their textbooks, hoping for praise and illumination. What they found were descriptions of ‘mobs’ and ‘crowds’; defences of ordered governance and condemnations of irrational protest. In disbelief, some began to take up the pen. Perhaps they could foment a theoretical revolution to match the tumult of the streets? There were, in fact, two revolutions.
It was possible to identify a regular pattern of mobilisation, achievement and decline. This was a ‘cycle of protest’. Tarrow found it in the 1840s and the 1960s. Fellow students took up his ideas with relish. At the New School of Social Research and then at Columbia University, Tilly inspired and frightened scores of eager students.
