February 22, 2010
The XII Provincial Assembly of our Province was a celebration of our Pallottine identity and community life. It ended well. There were 39 participants who actively participated in the Assembly with a generous love for the Province and a spirit of communion. I thank all the participants for their valuable contribution. I hope that by now the Local Rectors might have briefed the members on the outcome of the Assembly. The Assembly has strongly recommended studying the ACTA in the Local Communities and implementing it. The ACTA of the Assembly is being dispatched from the Provincialate. The Assembly also has asked the Provincial Rector to send out circulars on the major resolutions passed, very specially on the election in the Province and a reminder on income from pastoral activity. In the coming days I will be sending out these circulars.
Let me add a few lines on the latest developments in our new missions. The feast of St. Vincent Pallotti was celebrated in the Arunachal Mission with great Pallottine spirit. Very Rev. Fr. Friedrich Kretz, the Rector General, Fr. Jacob Nampudakam and I were present for the celebrations. We are greatly impressed by the faith of the people and the hard work of our confreres. Presently our confreres are busy conducting Lenten retreats in the various villages of our mission stations. The latest news from Zambia is that next month we will be opening our first formation house in the farm land at Westwood. Five students will begin their formation on April 05, 2010 in the present farm house in Westwood. I will be in Lusaka in the Holy Week. Rector General and Fr. Jacob Nampudakam too will join for the inauguration of the formation house. It is also our added joy to learn that the Archbishop of Lusaka intends to give the city parish close to Westwood to our pastoral care.
We have begun the holy season of lent; a season of grace as well as penance. I would like to add an extract from the Assembly’s deliberation on its theme “To Revive Faith and Rekindle Charity: Apostles of Jesus in a Changing World” for our reflection and introspection during this season: As authentic witnesses of faith, priests and religious must set an example before the people. No doubt, a credible life is required. For a credible life, priests and religious should bear witness to supernatural values. Their life should be far above that of the worldly wise people. Their motives, conviction and life style should present otherworldliness and holiness. Credibility and authenticity are achieved, when we believe what we read, teach what we believe and practice what we teach. As our Founder himself envisioned, a priest must be holy and learned without which he does not qualify to be a priest. To his mind if the priest is holy he does not have to look for souls, souls would come to him. Authenticity arising from personal holiness is the most important quality that the faithful are expecting from a Catholic priest in India. Our lives shall talk and witness to Christ and His Church’s mission much more than our lips.
I wish you all a grace-filled season of lent,
Fr. Augustine Varickakal
